    HUMAN RIGHTS REPORT

We all know that we are in the one of the worse economic crisis that our country has ever been in. People are losing their jobs, losing their homes and losing sight of the American dream. We got here because of eight years of President Bush and his policies. The one thing that President Bush did do and wished that he hadn’t was that he woke up the silent majority. They spoke loud and clear with their votes and with the help of union members all across the country, Barack Obama is now the President of the United States. He gives everyone hope. He is the first African-American to become President of the United States. With him coming from his humble background he is an inspiration to everyone who wants to achieve anything in their life. They no longer can say “I can not do it”, but they can now say is “yes I can”. He makes people believe again that they can achieve the American dream. My idea of the American dream is having a good paying job with good benefits, owning your own home, having some free time to spend with your family and friends, and being able to send your children to good schools and hope that they can do even better than you did. We now have a president that will get this country back on the right track. He is a president that will keep his promises to the American people. He promised not only to listen to the people but also to hear them. We know that he cannot do this alone. He needs the help and support of every American. We realize that getting this country back in the right direction will not be easy or quick. It is going to take a lot of hard work and time but he will do it with our help and support.

    UPDATE ON PRESIDENT OBAMA

In the first 28 days of his administration President Obama has done the following:

    1)      President Obama signed into law the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, which restores a workers right to seek redress for illegal pay discrimination. Lilly Ledbetter, a supervisor in a Goodyear Tire & Rubber plant, discovered after 19 years that she was paid significantly less than all of her male counterparts. A jury agreed she was unfairly underpaid and awarded her $223,766.00 in back pay and more then $3 million in punitive damages. The Supreme Court then took away every penny of her back pay and damages. The Supreme Court ruled that employees had to sue within 180 days of their first discriminatory paycheck.

    2)      President Obama signed an executive order allowing the federal government to require project labor agreements (PLAs) on large-scale construction projects. Such agreements are efficient, save money and promote safety and labor standards.

    3)      President Obama signed a stimulus package of $782 billion

    4)      President Obama has his team distributing the rest of the $700 billion bail-out money with restrictions and to have those who receive the money to be able to account for it.

I think that what he promised the American people, in his campaign, is what he is doing. He’s working on solving the economic crisis that this country is in. He also is being labor friendly.
